Arzberg porcelain

The Arzberg brand

Arzberg is regarded worldwide as a design brand for porcelain. What constitutes good design? Aesthetics, functionality and durability: Arzberg. What is a special claim? Committed to beauty, dedicated to utility, close to life: Arzberg. What makes eating and drinking an experience? Form 1382, Form 2000, TRIC, Cucina, ... Arzberg.

From Arzberg to Rosenthal and Thomas

Founded in 1887, the traditional German brand Arzberg has been part of Rosenthal GmbH since 2013 and has launched multiple award-winning designs over the decades. The integration of the Arzberg tableware collections into the Rosenthal and Thomas ranges gives the four popular Arzberg designs even greater international appeal and visibility. The high quality and outstanding design of the products remain unchanged. The product structure also remains the same. The tableware is simply rebranded with a new stamp on the underside.

The Arzberg Cucina and Arzberg Tric collections are available under the Thomas brand. You can find these alongside the classic Thomas tableware collections in the online shop. Form 1382 and Arzberg Joyn have been integrated into the Rosenthal brand.

Arzberg brand values

The power of the brand and design are values that endure, even when the market changes. A set table needs porcelain. Again and again. Every day. Arzberg produces porcelain that lasts. In different lines, for different occasions and lifestyles. This philosophy also applies to the Rosenthal and Thomas brands. Likewise, the traditional Arzberg porcelain remains unchanged in terms of quality and design.

The Arzberg brand design

‘We can no longer afford to bring products onto the market that consumers quickly lose interest in because they are impractical, outdated or unfashionable,’ said Dr Hermann Gretsch, whose Form 1382 revolutionised the world of porcelain in the early 1930s. The legendary design he created for Arzberg at the time is considered one of the absolute classics of modern industrial design. It is one of the few porcelain exhibits on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Function and emotion

Simplicity rather than decoration: this clear commitment has shaped the success story of the Arzberg design brand since 1931. But functional design alone is not enough to win over more and more buyers over the decades. Why is Arzberg so successful? Because Arzberg's designs bridge the gap between function and emotion: because people enjoy using Arzberg porcelain often, because they enjoy touching it often, because they love it.

Aspiration and mission

The mission given to Arzberg's designers is clear, yet incredibly complex: ‘To translate the democratic idea of functional design with a personal touch into design for life.’ Only a few designers can achieve this. The best of them worked for Arzberg. Their designs are simple and unadorned, timeless and therefore always contemporary. Since 1931.

Motivation and maxim

Hermann Gretsch summed up his intention with the statement ‘Explore the essence of things’ and created the Form 1382. For 80 years now, it has been one of the best-selling porcelain items worldwide. Gretsch's maxim led to the rise of the Franconian porcelain manufacturer to an international porcelain design brand and still guides Arzberg today.

Mission statement and life

Arzberg focuses on design. With an eye on future developments and trends, it does not simply replicate the style of the times, but helps to shape it. This results in timeless lines that all Arzberg designers consistently pursue. High standards of practicality, utility, quality, design, aesthetics and realism – these are the criteria that make porcelain ‘excellent’ porcelain. The numerous awards prove that Arzberg can do it.

The Arzberg Awards

Good design is a commitment: The company received its first international awards – the Gold Medal at the VI Triennale in Milan and the World Exhibition in Paris – in 1936 and 1937 for Hermann Gretsch's Form 1382. Numerous awards followed. Peter Schmidt's Form 2006 and Heike Philipp's Gourmet alone received a total of seven of the most coveted international awards.

Form 1382

In 1931, Arzberg launched the shape 1382 by Dr Hermann Gretsch, which revolutionised the porcelain industry. With its clear functionality and aesthetic elegance, it set itself apart from the overloaded designs that were common at the time. The timeless design of the Form 1382 has remained unchanged ever since and retains its fascination to this day. This collection is one of the iconic masterpieces of modern industrial design and is even represented in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

JOYN

Joyn embodies sharing - be it the joy of a lovingly prepared meal, the cosiness of a shared meal or socialising with friends. A variety of bowls make it possible to share food with one another and serve it easily. The contemporary aesthetics of Joyn are reflected in the fine vertical relief that gives the porcelain structure. The combination of white, denim blue and light grey as well as the warm stoneware earth tones gives the table a light, natural and urban look.

A new chapter for Arzberg

A part of the Arzberg brand with it`s rich heritage will live on and is entering a new chapter. No longer available through traditional retail, it is now offered exclusively through a dedicated partner network for well selected and unique loyalty programs. This focused distribution model allows for closer collaboration, tailored offerings, and a more refined customer experience—while preserving the values that made the brand a classic in the first place.

Rosenthal wants to simplify its brand structure and concentrate more on the two brands Rosenthal and Thomas.

The integration of Arzberg products into the Rosenthal and Thomas Porcelain ranges is intended to give the popular shapes and collections even more internationality and visibility in future.

The Arzberg Cucina and Tric collections will be part of the Thomas Porcelain brand, while Form 1382 and JOYN will continue under the Rosenthal label. These will of course also be available for purchase in the respective online shops.

Form 2000 will no longer be produced in future. It is still available in stores as a discontinued model while stocks last.

Rosenthal started to gradually switch production at the beginning of 2024. Gradually, items with the Arzberg base stamp will no longer be available in stores. In future, these will be labelled with the Rosenthal or Thomas base stamp. Even after the changeover, there may be a mix of bottom stamps in future, as products with Arzberg stamps are still in circulation and new items with Rosenthal or Thomas bottom stamps are already on the market. Unfortunately, we cannot rule out these mix-ups.

The series will be available in the online shops of Rosenthal and Thomas Porcelain. The moulds will also continue to be available in selected specialist shops.

The high quality and outstanding design of these products, which stand for aesthetics, functionality and durability, will not change. The product structure will also remain the same. The moulds will simply be given a new base stamp.

Rosenthal believes in these beautiful collections, which is why they will continue to be produced under the Rosenthal and Thomas brand names and will remain available until further notice.
