Would you have known?
Hard to believe, but the origins of the floral motifs of the classic "onion pattern" go back to the time of the Ming Dynasty in ancient China and were brought to Europe in the 18th century. The vernacular dubbed the décor "onion pattern", misjudging the true motifs - although the pomegranates, peaches, peonies and aster-bamboo bouquets actually depicted stand for wealth, fertility and immortality. Some people may look at the beloved décor with completely new eyes now...

Hutschenreuther - porcelain under the banner of the lion

At the beginning of the 19th century, a young porcelain painter named Carl Magnus Hutschenreuther from Thuringia went in search of ‘white gold’, which he eventually found in north east Bavaria. The young Hutschenreuther had disco- vered ‘china clay’ (or kaolin) for the production of porcelain, and in 1814 he founded the first modern and private porcelain factory in Bavaria. His aim was to manufacture porcelain ‘second to none’ for quality and excellence in Germany. Under the direction of his son Lorenz, a second porcelain factory was founded in 1857 in the neighbouring town of Selb. More than one hundred years later, in 1969, both companies combined to form Hutschenreuther AG, Selb. By this time, the Hutschenreuther name was already well known especially among connoisseurs and lovers of fine porcelain. Today Hutschenreuther is one of the most important porcelain brands in the world. Modern production technology, combined with traditional craftsmanship, as well as creativity and competence in creation, quality and practicality have all been decisive factors in the success of the brand.

In August 1st 2000 the “Lion Brand” Hutschenreuther joined the Rosenthal Group. Two famous companies from Upper Franconia were united under one umbrella and took over the leading position in the German market for high quality porcelain. Since August 2009 Rosenthal is part of the Sambonet Paderno Group, an Italian leader in the manufacture of tabletop and kitchen accessories. The acqusition of Rosenthal on August 1st 2009 created a market-leading company for exclusive tabletop products. Today Hutschenreuther plays an important role in the portfolio of Rosenthal GmbH.

Since then, Hutschenreuther has emerged as a stylish brand for enjoyable living and ingenious gift ideas. Today, we associate the traditional brand Hutschenreuther with the “Blue Onion” pattern and the timeless “Maria Theresia” design every bit as with the limited article collections – the limited Hutschenreuther Christmas bell, for example, is an inherent part of the Christmas festivities for many people.

Whether spring, summer, autumn or winter, a number of service concepts, seasonal gift ideas and successful article collections kindle the desire for more. This is why Hutschenreuther shows itself in a contemporary modern light in 2014. New collections and a new lion underscore the current look without sacrificing consistency and tradition. Classics like the Maria Theresia design are experiencing a renaissance with new patterns, and gift ideas such as vases, bowls, boxes and figurative decoration articles form a significant part of the Hutschenreuther collections, too.
