Beautiful bread plates for the set table
Bread plates are an integral part of fine dining. As practical companions throughout the meal, they offer ample space for bread and rolls and help prevent crumbs and butter stains. In fine dining and for an elegant table setting, it is customary to provide a separate bread plate for each place setting. In addition to adhering to traditional etiquette, these small bread plates also convey your hospitality.

Discover Rosenthal’s design collections
As a result of traditional craftsmanship and innovative manufacturing processes, Rosenthal’s bread plates set high standards in the realm of fine tableware. Discover the versatile designs that make the bread plates the star of your set table:
- The elegant white bread plates from the Rosenthal Jade collection, crafted from delicately lustrous bone china, capture traditional values and the spirit of the times in a particularly graceful manner.
- In contrast to the understated design of Jade Weiss (white), the Rosenthal Brillance Fleurs Sauvages bread plate is inspired by springtime flower meadows. The decoration by textile designer Regula Stüdli has an almost dreamlike quality and adds beautiful accents.
- With the luxurious bread plates from the Rosenthal meets Versace collections, you can create special accents. Discover the luxurious bread plates from the Rosenthal meets Versace Medusa Amamplified collection. These captivate with their glossy black porcelain, on which Versace’s characteristic Medusa heads are artistically depicted in various colours.
A round bread plate made of porcelain or the finest bone china exudes an irresistible charm, resulting from Rosenthal’s characteristic aesthetic and the finest porcelain quality. Elegant shapes and clean lines lend this indispensable table companion a timeless beauty that enriches the table setting as a secret star at every course.
Rosenthal’s bread plates made from high-quality porcelain and stoneware also offer the opportunity to mix and match different decorations to suit your taste. For example, the stoneware bread plate from the Rosenthal Junto can be beautifully combined with timeless white dinnerware, adding a special touch.
Sizes and general etiquette: Where does the bread plate go?
Bread plates are among the smallest dinner plates and are placed on the left-hand side next to the cutlery. Only individual slices of bread or rolls are served on them – the bread basket is for everything else. As a rule, classic bread plates are smaller than dessert plates or breakfast plates. Therefore, a small bread plate measuring 10 cm to 12 cm or a large bread plate measuring 15 cm or 16 cm is not placed on the service plates, but on the left-hand side next to the cutlery.
Whichever bread plate size you choose: the bread plate is often served with starters such as salads and soups, but it also helps to keep the appetite going when served as a snack between courses.
Traditionally, the bread knife is placed on the outer edge of the bread plates set on the left: when positioning it, you can use either the base line or the centre line of the dinner plates as a guide. It is up to the host or hostess to decide when the bread plates should be cleared.
Versatile use of porcelain plates: ideal for side dishes
Whether as bread plates for salad or soup, for brunch, or as versatile plates for snacks with the main meal: bread plates are used in a variety of ways in everyday life. Thanks to their small diameter of approximately 10 to 16 cm, they fit comfortably on any table, not only as bread plates in the strictest sense, but also as plates for side dishes.
Small portions of salad can also be arranged on the plates and artfully garnished, true to the saying ‘you eat with your eyes first’. It’s also worth reaching for bread plates rather than dinner plates for a quick snack between meals, as cakes, pastries, sandwiches and sliced vegetables look wonderful on them.
Porcelain or stoneware?
Porcelain dinnerware is high-quality, timeless and exudes elegance. Often, however, it is above all the sentimental value of porcelain dinnerware that makes it so special: your grandmother’s elaborately decorated cups and a porcelain service received as a wedding gift will accompany you throughout your life and are often passed on to the next generation.
Unlike stoneware, porcelain dinnerware takes on a characteristic white colour after firing and is then coated with a clear glaze, giving it a beautiful sheen. The glaze makes the dinnerware waterproof and allows it to be decorated. In contrast, plates and cups made of stoneware have a more rustic appearance.
Stoneware tableware is fired at higher temperatures than porcelain and often features a distinctive look and original colours that complement modern interior styles particularly well. Which material is best suited to your bread plates is, of course, a matter of taste.
Tip: You can also mix and match plates, bowls and dishes made of porcelain and stoneware to create unique table settings.
