CRAFTSMANSHIP

What we strive for – High Standards

People are the heartbeat of Rosenthal. While we use advanced technology, handcraft remains essential in production. Many steps — from drying and bisque firing to glazing and decorating — still require skilled artisanship and technical expertise. Our porcelain factories “Rosenthal am Rothbühl” and “Thomas am Kulm” are located in Bavaria. These state-of-the-art facilities meet international standards and focus on sustainable manufacturing and resource efficiency. Our employees are key to staying competitive in a global market. Their passion, skills, and curiosity drive Rosenthal’s success. Around 600 people create products that unite beauty, functionality, and meticulous craftsmanship.

DESIGN

What we stand for – Creativity & High Quality

Rosenthal has always stood for avant-garde porcelain design. Around 1,000 designers and artists, including Patricia Urquiola, Martin Hirth, Bethan Laura Wood or Sebastian Herkner, have collaborated with the Bavarian company. All Rosenthal collections — whether new creations or design icons — reflect a brand rooted in tradition, innovation, and craftsmanship. The Bauhaus movement, founded in 1919, significantly shaped modern design and influenced Rosenthal’s legacy. In 1967, architect Walter Gropius designed the Rosenthal am Rothbühl factory and later the iconic TAC tea set — timeless in elegance and function. Rosenthal has always supported emerging talent through partnerships with international design universities — investing in the next generation of visionary professionals and in the company’s future. With over 500 international awards, including the iF Award, German Design Award, and Red Dot Award, Rosenthal continues to set standards in innovative, sustainable, and high-quality design.

HISTORY

Where it all began – SCHLOSS ERKERSREUTH in Bavaria, Germany.

Founded in 1879, Rosenthal’s story is shaped by founder Philipp Rosenthal Senior and his son, the visionary Philip Rosenthal Junior. While the father laid the foundation for porcelain production, the son turned Rosenthal into a global design brand with a passion for everyday luxury and design. At seventeen, Philipp Rosenthal Senior left for America, working his way up from dishwasher to porcelain salesman. Returning to Germany in 1879, he founded a porcelain painting business at Erkersreuth Castle in Upper Franconia, Bavaria — the birthplace of what would become a world-renowned company. Early design icons like the Maria collection, named after his wife, debuted during this time. In 1950, Philip Rosenthal joined the company and transformed it into a global name for elegant tableware and home décor. Visionary and charismatic, he collaborated with leading creatives and remained a driving force in the porcelain industry until his death in 2001.
