Tapio Wirkkala - a master of Scandinavian design

Tapio Wirkkala, born on June 2, 1915 in Hanko, Finland, and died on May 19, 1985 in Espoo, is one of the outstanding representatives of Scandinavian design culture. His career began with an employment with Raymond Loewy, a pioneer of industrial design, whose influence is reflected in Wirkkala's later works.

At his very first participation in the Milan Triennale art and design exhibition, he was awarded three gold medals and the prestigious Grand Prix - a prelude to a remarkable series of international honors, including an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London.

Wirkkala's work covers a broad spectrum from graphic design to product design and interior design. He is considered a pioneer of the Nordic design language, which is characterized by functional elegance, clear lines and a respectful approach to materials. His best-known works include the iconic porcelain designs for Rosenthal and his innovative approach to everyday objects. His name became synonymous with timeless Scandinavian aesthetics, which are still appreciated worldwide today.
