"Designer of the Year" Sebastian Henker: International breakthrough as an award-winning product designer

Sebastian Herkner was born in Bad Mergentheim in 1981 and studied product design at the HfG Offenbach. In 2006, he founded his studio, where he combines cultural and artisanal elements and interprets them in a modern way. His international breakthrough came in 2012 with the Bell Table for ClassiCon. Since then, Herkner has received numerous awards, including the EDIDA Award 2015 and 2021, as well as the title “Designer of the Year” 2019 at Maison&Objet. As one of the most important designers of his generation, he now designs furniture, glass and porcelain for leading brands - and plays a special role in Rosenthal's product design.

Sebastian Herkner's design philosophy: harmony of material and culture

Sebastian Herkner's designs unite seemingly contradictory elements: different materials, traditional craftsmanship and modern technologies. For the product designer, the material is always at the beginning of the creative process - his “material shelf” in the studio in Offenbach is the heart of his work. For him, every material tells a story, which he develops and refines in his designs.

Herkner draws his inspiration from travels around the world, especially from Asia, where he has experienced traditional craftsmanship and cultural rituals. In Rosenthal, Sebastian Herkner has found a partner who shares his passion for high-quality materials and precise craftsmanship, while at the same time being able to realize his designs with technical expertise.

Collana: porcelain meets glass

The Collana collection by Sebastian Herkner was designed in 2014 and is more than just a vase collection for Rosenthal - it is a stylish piece of jewelry for the home. The Italian name “Collana”, which means “necklace” in English, says it all: a delicate glass ring wraps around the neck of each porcelain vase like a necklace, giving it a unique, sculptural presence. This collection combines porcelain and glass in harmonious elegance and radiates a very special grace that also points innovatively to the future.

The glass rings of the Collana vases have been designed in different color variations, from cool industrial smoky grey to vibrant red. The matt porcelain vase, decorated with a shimmering rim in silver, gold or white, creates the perfect contrast and accentuates the glass details.

Rosenthal tea set Wan: The art of the tea ceremony reinterpreted

For the Rosenthal tea set Wan, Sebastian Herkner draws on his passion for Asian culture and his trips to China, where the traditional tea ceremony is an integral part of everyday life. “Wan” means “bowl” in Chinese and is the centerpiece of this tea service, which Herkner designed for the Rosenthal Studio-Line. The design of the tea service combines the Chinese tea tradition with European design and thus captures cultural diversity in innovative product design.

The Wan tea service is made of fine, translucent porcelain, which is characterized by a fascinating feel - and creates a harmonious overall concept when combined with glass. The glass lid of the teapot is reminiscent of traditional Chinese tea caddies and lends the tableware a special authenticity.

Hop design vase: simplicity in perfection

With the Hop vase, Sebastian Herkner has created another masterfully simple design for Rosenthal. The Rosenthal design vase impresses with its clear, cylindrical shape and purist aesthetics, which perfectly reflect Herkner's philosophy of materiality and simple elegance. The soft transitions between the grooves ensure that the vase appears harmonious and flowing and dynamic despite its striking shape. The fine porcelain and minimalist shape make Hop an understated yet striking accent in any room.

Falda: a masterpiece of modern art and technology

The Falda vase by Sebastian Herkner is a tribute to the art of folding and a technically demanding feat of porcelain production. Inspired by a piece of folded, gold-colored aluminum paper he found in his studio, Herkner combines clean lines with an exceptionally detailed, pleated collar in the design of the vase.

The impressive gold-flecked collar is reminiscent of Art Deco elegance and gives the vase a luxurious look that almost hovers like a royal nimbus - a halo - around any floral arrangement. The Falda vase is made from a single piece of porcelain - a technical masterpiece that reflects the high standards of craftsmanship at Rosenthal and Herkner's creative vision in equal measure. Whether in the elegant combination of white and gold or in pure white, Falda is an eye-catcher and a stylish art object that combines tradition and modernity in a unique form.
