*1931

The architect Alessandro Mendini played a crucial role in the development of Italian design. Editor of the magazines Casbella (1967-1976), Modo and domus (each 1979-1985), he was the theorist of Italian avantgarde design for many years and an impulse generator for new tendencies. His works exemplify the cross-bordering of the arts, architecture and design.
Together with other Italian designers he developed the so-called Banaldesign, changing items of everyday use into new, ironic objects by means of colours and shapes. Mendini called this transformation "Re-design". In 1989 he founded the Atelier Mendini together with his brother Francesco, also an architect.
Mendini created for Rosenthal the annual espresso cup on the shape »Mythos« in 1998.
