Reinhold Messner is a border-crosser, author and mountain-farmer. For more than 20 years he has been one of the top mountaineers world-wide: amongst his 3,500 mountain expeditions are 100 first ascents and he succeeded in ascending all of the world's 14 summits over 8000 m. In 1978 he was the first man ever to climb Mount Everest (8,848 m) "by fair means" and without using artificial oxygen. On foot he crossed Antarctica, walked through Greenland longitudinally, as well as Tibet and the Takla Mahan desert. His 35 publications have been translated into dozens of languages and often awarded prizes. Since 1999 he has been a member of the European Parliamnet representing the "Greens". For the "Celebrity Art" collection of Rosenthal studio-line Messmer created a V.I.P.-Plate in 2004. Five percent of the proceeds will go to the Reinhold-Messner-Stiftung according to his wishes.
